Welcome to the numeracy part of the blog.
In Room 1 we have 24 children for maths. We are working at the materials stage, the imaging stage and beginning advanced counting.
Materials:
Materials means answering the question by using things to count, It could be fingers, counters, anything that can be counted.
In this group we are working on numbers to 20, especially those tricky teen numbers.
This group is also beginning place value. Recognising that a 2 digit number contains tens and ones and how may of each and creating these numbers with bundles of 10.
Imaging:
Imaging means being able to solve addition and subtraction problems in your head- mental arithmetic.
we are working on imaging to 10. Beginning with knowing groups using 5-e.g. 5+2=7 then moving on to groups to 10- 6+4=10 then all the other problems that come up in between- 7+2=9.
Imaging is hard for some children as it takes a while for them to move away from relying on things to count.
Advanced Counting:
The beginning of this stage involves counting on. Putting the big number in your head and counting on initially with materials, then using imaging. The children are working on numbers to 100.
Below you will find some videos of children practising different strategies and some games the children can play at home.
